Press Release (Community Crime Report)

Victim Of A Burglary Fights Back By Launching A Community Crime Report Platform

The victim of a recent burglary in St James, Barbados decided to use his own financial resources and knowledge of today's technology to fight back by launching a global crime fighting initiative.

On 4th March 2023, a burglar attempted to break into the home of entrepreneur Charles Lewis on the west coast of Barbados, but was unsuccessful. He then proceeded to steal various items from the porch. Unknown to the burglar, he was captured on the security surveillance camera. Upon viewing the footage, Mr Lewis immediately alerted the police and the members of his community. He also posted the video footage on social media.

It was the vigilance and support of the community that led to the quick arrest and prosecution of the burglar, who has since been sentenced to 8 months in prison for this crime.

The experience became the catalyst to the launching of the Community Crime Report (CCR) platform by Mr Lewis on 20th March 2023, as a valuable public service for the members of communities worldwide, in the fight against crime.

CCR is a platform which enables members of the community to upload detailed reports of any criminal activity they are a victim of or witnesses to. These reports are then shared instantly with the members of all neighbouring communities.

The police are also invited to upload crime reports, advisories and other information as part of their crime awareness, crime prevention and crime solving strategies.

BENEFITS TO THE COMMUNITY
CCR offers the following benefits to the members of the community, businesses and to the police.

  1. CCR is an effective platform to instantly report and share information about criminal activity with members of the neighbouring communities.
  2. It is important for all members of the community to be notified instantly of any criminality activity as a crime awareness and prevention strategy.
  3. Detailed crime reports published on the CCR platform can assist police with their investigations.
  4. Instant widespread notification of criminal activity can result in the quick apprehension of criminals.
  5. Submitting instant crime reports can save other community members from becoming victims of the same crime.
  6. CCR is also an effective platform for the police to instantly disseminate information to the public about criminal activity.
  7. CCR is also an effective platform for the police to galvanise the support of the members of the community to fight crime.
  8. Effective, widespread use of the CCR platform will be a deterrent to criminals.

As part of the research, Mr Lewis spoke to Station Sargeant Lynch of the Holetown Police Station in Barbados, who immediately recognised the need and potential of the Community Crime Report platform as a crime fighting tool for the police and the community. Officer Lynch also advised Mr Lewis to send a letter to the Commissioner Of Police to get the support of the entire police force.

Information has also been sent to the Attorney General, Hon. Dale Marshall to inform him of this initiative.
