A 32-year-old woman named Jennifer Appiah has allegedly stabbed her boyfriend to death at Ayigya Zongo in the Grater Kumasi of Ashanti Region

According to a report by StarrFM, the suspect, also known as Maa Akua, allegedly stabbed the deceased her lover, Joseph Bawa, multiple times on Sunday after a misunderstanding ensued between them.

Mother of the deceased, Madam Hawa Alhasan told reporters that her son was pronounced dead upon arrival to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital also known as “Tech Hospital”.

She however couldn’t explain what caused the misunderstanding between her deceased son and the suspect.

She is reported to have explained that “any time misunderstanding ensues between the two the woman threatens the deceased with knife and scissors any time they have a fight’’.

“I have urged my son to stop dating the woman countless times but he refused to do so until his premature demise”.

“Now the lady after killing my son has escaped, and so we are pleading with the Police to arrest and bring her to book”.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the KNUST Hospital morgue for reservation while police investigation has commenced.

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) has called for an immediate and independent investigation into the June 8, 2023, shooting by police in Bortianor, a suburb of Accra.

Five people were killed in the incident, which the police have said was a shoot-out with suspected land guards.

However, the BPS has raised concerns about the police’s use of force, saying that it appears to have been unjustified.

“With great distress, we acknowledge the possibility that the five individuals may have fallen

victim to what appears to be an unjustified use of force,” Nana Yaw Akwada, the Executive Director of BPS said in a press statement.

“This is deeply troubling and goes against our constitution’s justice and fair treatment principles.”

The BPS is concerned about the emerging culture of violence by the police service.

In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile incidents in which police have used excessive force, sometimes resulting in the deaths of innocent civilians.

“The trust and confidence of the public in law enforcement are essential, and it is paramount that any concerns regarding police actions are thoroughly examined by a neutral and objective body,” said Akwada.

We are minded by outcomes of similar incidents in the recent past and fear that if this trend is not adequately addressed it might endanger innocent lives of citizens, lead to a loss of trust in the police and thus undermine their legitimacy. The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has provided clarifications regarding the operations of his office in his fight against corruption and related offences.

He explained that he has a distinct approach when inviting informants, compared to individuals considered as suspects.

Mr. Agyebeng highlighted that individuals categorized as suspects are generally requested to appear with their legal representatives.

The Special Prosecutor’s statement comes in response to his invitation and subsequent arrest of former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, who was later granted a GH¢2 million bail last month.

The former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation was invited to address inquiries pertaining to alleged corruption and corruption-related offences concerning the activities and expenditure of the dissolved Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), he chaired.

“We treat everybody in the same manner when you appear before us. The nature of how you come to us is very crucial and very important. If you are my confidential source, whistleblower, there is a way I will contact you, and there is a way I will invite you. There is a way I will talk to you because I need information from you. But if you are appearing before me as a suspect, there is also a way. I do not invite you, I direct you to show up because it is a criminal investigation. You are directed to show up. And in the direction to show up, you are specifically told, what we are investigating and the subject matter of what we are investigating”.

He emphasized, “And then in the direction for you to come, we tell you that you are a person who is considered necessary for the investigation. And there is a specific direction for you to show up at a specific address for the interview. Then you are told of your rights, that when you are coming, you may come with the counsel of your choice”.

According to Mr. Agyebeng, whistleblowers are not required to appear with their lawyers, whereas suspects are instructed to bring their legal representatives.

“If I see you as a whistleblower, I consider you as a confidential source, I will not be telling you that when you are appearing before me, come with your lawyer. Why would you need a lawyer if you are coming to divulge some information which I may be interested in? But immediately I tell you that you are directed to show up and that come with a lawyer, then you should know that you are a suspect. And that goes for everyone who appears before us in that scheme of affairs,” he explained on Newsfile on Joy FM.

He noted that people are currently attempting to grasp the nature of his office and its operations.

“It is a unique institution with powers that people are now trying to understand,” Kissi Agyebeng stated.

The Barbados Police Service is investigating an incident at the Ball Park Events and Entertainment Centre, in Rising Sun, Christ Church on Saturday evening.

Police say that a report was made to District B Police Station, Boarded Hall, Christ Church indicating “that five patrons were robbed by two men armed with guns whilst playing recreation golf at an event at the Ball Park, Rising Sun, Christ Church”.

“The victims were playing recreational golf when the two assailants approached them armed with weapons. They robbed them of various personal possessions and money. They then made off without further incident."

Duo caught with $744 600 worth of cannabis sentenced to prison

Two Tobagonians who trafficked $744 600 worth of marijuana in Barbados’ territorial waters will each spend over two more years behind bars here.

As of Tuesday, Anton James has 1 182 more days, or around three years, left to serve at Dodds Prison, while Kyrsten Trim has just over two years, or 1 002 days.

Justice Randall Worrell handed down the sentences on the duo in the No. 2 Supreme Court. The jail time is the remainder of a 12-year starting sentence imposed for trafficking 193.65 kilograms or 426.92 pounds of cannabis on February 15, 2021. James and Trim were convicted, reprimanded, and discharged on the offenses of possession and importation of the illicit drug.

“This is a matter that can only be dealt with by way of a custodial sentence. It is quite clear [given] the excessive amount of drugs,” Justice Worrell told the convicted men. “I don’t think a starting point of 12 years is unreasonable given the quantity.”

From the 12 years, a deduction of three years was given for mitigating factors and another three years for their guilty pleas, leaving them with six years, or 2 190 days, left to serve.

They were also credited with 828 days which is the time they had already spent on remand at Dodds. That left 1 362 days, from which another 180 days were deducted, given the two-year delay which it took for the matter to be adjudicated.

Given that James admitted he was the mastermind of the enterprise, he will spend the next 1 182 days in jail.

Trim, meanwhile, was given a further deduction of 180 days from his 1 182 days as he is said to have played a more subordinate role.

Both men were told to participate in vocational and educational programs available at the prison.

Justice Worrell said the court had looked at imposing fines on the Tobagonians but there was nothing to indicate they could pay.

According to the facts of the case read to the court by Acting Senior State Counsel Rudolph Burnett, officers from the Drug Squad and the Coast Guard ventured out to.

Personnel at the Central Police Station are carrying out investigations into the unnatural death of a male at Ellis Village, St. Michael on May 29, 2023.

The police responded to a residence at Ellis Village, St. Michael about 7:30 p.m. On arrival, they viewed the body of a male hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom. A medical doctor pronounced death at the scene.

Police have not identified the man as yet.
Investigations are continuing into this matter.

He is Ranako Brathwaite, 26 years, of Fairfield Cross Road, Tudor Bridge, St Michael.

Brathwaite is about 5 feet 9 inches tall, with a slim build and dark complexion. He also has medium eyes, a small mouth, and a large head, and his hair is plaited in cornrows.

So declared Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell as she sentenced self-confessed gunman Baggio Elson Roberto Roach to a starting point of eight years in jail yesterday in the No. 4 Supreme Court. He will serve a remaining 896 days or two years, 166 days from today.

The Barbados Police Service is on the scene in Green Hill Close, Silver Hill, Christ Church, where reports indicate that at least one person has been shot.

While Communications and Public Affairs Officer with the Service, Inspector Rodney Inniss, confirmed that police received a report of a shooting in the area around 2:32 p.m., he could not provide any further information at this time.

Authorities from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service have taken into custody two individuals who are friends of Osei Michael, the barber accused of murdering his girlfriend in Akyem Nsutam near Bunso Junction, located in the Eastern Region.

The incident occurred when Osei Michael, also known as Emeka, allegedly stabbed his 18-year-old girlfriend, Abigail Asare, who had come to visit him during a short break from her school, following a directive from the school’s management.

She was a student of the New Nsutam Senior High Technical School in the Abuakwa-North District.

 The police detained the two friends on Sunday to aid their ongoing investigations and ultimately assist in the apprehension of Emeka, who has been evading capture since the heinous act occurred.

The Kyebi Divisional Police, who have been tirelessly searching for the suspect Emeka, are determined to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice and bring the perpetrator to face the consequences of his actions.

The Krachi East Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service is investigating the tragic death of a 55-year-old woman, who was knocked down by a hit-and-run driver.

Ama Wete, the deceased suffered her predicament on the outskirts of Kparekpare, a farming community in Dambai of the Oti Region on Thursday evening, June 1.

Sergeant Zakaria Asharift, of the MTTD told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that investigations were underway to ascertain the cause of the accident.

He confirmed to the GNA that the deceased suffered head injuries after being knocked down by a yet-to-be-identified vehicle.

He said the deceased was taken to the Worawora Government Hospital for postmortem after which the body would be released to the family for burial.

Meanwhile, the Police are asking for help in finding the driver who struck the woman on the street and anyone with information that could identify the suspect is encouraged to contact the nearest Police station.
