An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced a businessman to a jail term of 12 months for bigamy.

Emmanuel Kodjo Narh got married to a nurse resident in the United States while still legally married to his wife in Ghana.

The court presided over by Mrs Christina Cann, however, acquitted Narh on the charge of the threat of harm.

The court noted that the prosecution had been able to prove the offence of bigamy, but they were unable to prove the charge of the threat of harm.

The case of prosecution is that the complainant whose name is withheld is a nurse resident in the USA and a native of Odumase Krobo.

Sometime in June 2015, while the complainant was in the USA, she received a call from her caretaker in Ghana that a road was being constructed on her parcel of land.

The prosecution said the caretaker then provided five phone numbers including Narh’s to the complainant.

It said the complainant called the numbers and Narh introduced himself and promised to address the challenge on the land.

The prosecution said through interactions, the complainant and Narh became friends.

Narh called the complainant daily to check up on her.

In August 2015, Narh proposed to the complainant, but she indicated that since they did not know themselves well and they had not met in person, she would be coming to Ghana for them to talk about the proposal.

The prosecution said on October 26, 2015, the complainant met Narh for the first time on her arrival at the airport.

It said on October 28, 2015, Narh engaged the complainant with a ring and took her to meet his family and some of his workers.

The prosecution said Narh had earlier told the complainant that he had six children with two other women but was married to none of them.

It said the complainant also told Narh that she was also a divorcee.

The prosecution said after the engagement, the complainant went back to the States in November 2015.

It said Narh’s family went to the complainant’s family house for the bridal list and performed the marriage rites in her absence.

The prosecution said the complainant returned to Ghana again and went with Narh to Lower Manya Krobo Municipal Assembly where the marriage was subsequently registered with certificate number LMKMA/MC/2015/18.

It said the complainant later saw another certificate of marriage between Narh and another woman with license number SMC/028/09 dated October 4, 2008.

She confronted Narh on that discovery and indicated that she would no longer continue with the marriage.

On April 24, 2016, the complainant’s ‘rival’ attacked and subjected her to physical abuse because she had taken over her husband.

The prosecution said the matter was reported to the Police at Odumase and Narh’s other wife was arrested.

It said Narh submitted his witness statement indicating that the two women were his wives.

Court remands man for insulting Akufo-Addo

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded into police custody a 40-year-old tile setter for insulting President of the republic of Ghana Nana Akuffo-Addo.

Raphael Okoe Ankrah, also known as Okoe Killer was arrested after police saw a video posted to social media showing the accused using very unsavoury words on the President.

He has since pleaded not guilty to offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace.

The Court presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, ordered that Ankrah be brought back on May 30, 2023.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Maxwell Oppong told the Court that Ankrah lived in Jamestown.

He said on May 15, 2023, the Police saw a viral video in which the Ankrah was seen insulting the President.

ASP Oppong said the police had to arrest Ankrah because the video was not only vile but had annoyed and agitated the public.

The Police’s Intelligence Directorate tracked Ankrah and arrested him at his hideout at James Town in Accra.

The prosecution said Ankrah admitted the offence in his investigation cautioned statement and was accordingly charged.

Mr Yaw Dankwa, Ankrah’s Defense Counsel who prayed for bail for the accused, said the charge did not support the facts, which he said was political, because his client denied the offence upon his arrest.

He suggested that the said video could have been manipulated and until it was presented and scrutinised in court, his client was innocent of the charges.

Mr Dankwa said Ankrah, a “responsible father” with a wife who had a two-week baby, was not a flight risk.

He said Ankrah had “people of substance” ready to stand surety for him.

The prosecution, opposing the bail, pleaded with the Court to send the accused to the psychiatric hospital as he told police he was not in his right frame of mind.

ASP Oppong said that based on Ankrah’s utterances in the video, he would be safer in police custody because his life was in danger in his community.

On him not being a flight risk, the prosecution said Ankrah was a squatter living in an uncompleted building with no fixed place of abode, but his lawyer said there were no uncompleted buildings in James Town.

The unfortunate incident happened on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at about 9am at the Anglican Church Park in Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region of Ghana.

The attacker was said to have used a club and a pestle to hit the heads of the police officers –an Inspector and a corporal – who fell unconscious in the process.

Bystanders around the scene were scared to get closer and this emboldened the attacker who later attempted to pick the rifle of one of the police officers but the brave Immigration Officer quickly picked the AK 47 rifle.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Western North Regional Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service, ACI Augustus Acheampong, AICO II Nurudeen Abul-Ganiew Takra, stationed at the Western North Immigration Regional Command was the one who rescued the two police officers who were under attack.

It noted that AICO II Nurudeen was returning home from the Sefwi Wiawso town when he noticed some commotion around the Anglican Church Park near the Wiawso District Police Station.

AICO II Nurudeen became curious and approached the scene and saw a police officer of the rank of Inspector lying unconscious on the ground and a Corporal also under attack with his AK 47 rifle on the ground.

The statement said the attacker advanced violently towards Nurudeen with a pestle,

but sensing danger, the Immigration officer fired a warning shot but the attacker did not retreat and kept advancing with the pestle in his hands.

“With extreme caution, Nurudeen shot the attacker’s right thigh to immobilise him. The noise attracted a number of people including Police Officers to the scene who assisted in arresting the attacker,” the statement added.

It added that items retrieved from the attacker included a sharp knife, locally made catapult, and a pestle which he used to attack his victims.

The two police officers and the attacker have since been taken to the Wiawso Municipal Hospital for medical attention. The AK 47 rifle has also been handed over to the Wiawso District Police for further action.

The church reported that the unknown person entered the auditorium, attacked the worshippers and inflicted knife wounds on two members so they called the police for assistance.

The members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who are are supporters of the Kwakye Ofosu in his quest to represent the opposition party in the constituency went on rampage last Friday May 5, 2023 disrupting the campaign of his main contender in the upcoming NDC parliamentary primaries Prof. Nana Ama Brown Klutse.

They destroyed the campaign vehicle of Kwakye Ofosu's main contender for NDC race who doubles as a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast when she was on campaign mission in Moree.

The supporters of Kwakye Fosu pelted the vehicle and other items with stones and damaged the windscreen and other parts.

Information gathered indicates that three of the rampaging supporters of Ofosu Kwakye were arrested by the police to assist with investigations.

They were later granted bail after Kwakye Ofosu allegedly showed up at the police station and signed for them.

The supporters misconducted themselves and caused the illegality when there was a misinformation that the National Organiser of the party, Joseph Yamin was in the constituency to campaign for the lecturer who is the main contender of Ofosu in the upcoming NDC parliamentary primaries.

Interestingly, Joseph Yamin was nowhere close to Moree when the incident occurred.

According to the national organiser of the NDC, he was not even in the Central Region at the time and stated that the last time he visited the region was for parliamentary vetting on April 4, 2023.

He expressed shock at about the reports and emphasised that he always informs regional executives of his presence before any visit.

“As I am speaking with you, I am in Sunyani and on an official assignment and so how was I attacked in Moree when I have never been to that region for some weeks now? Myself, when I heard the reports, I was surprised and wonder who came up with such baseless reports to tarnish my image,” Joseph Yamin told Accra based Adom FM after the incident occurred.

He also revealed receiving calls from Central Region executives regarding the attack and his alleged involvement in the confusion, which he denied.

“Around 11pm, I received calls from an executive in the constituency saying they have been attacked and that they were mentioning my name of being part and being the cause which I still don’t understand. For the past four months, I have never driven a pick up.

“Anytime I’m embarking on a journey in a region, I deal with the regional executives and inform them about my presence and so why will people name me as part of the confusion when I am not even in that region?” he questioned.

The Police have today, 8th May, 2023, arrested the two people who allegedly attacked Abubakari Sadiq, a presenter with the Dagbon FM in Tamale, while he was hosting a programme at the station on 3rd May, 2023.

Following the attack, the Police visited the scene but the suspects had bolted.

A video footage of the incident was obtained to aid the investigation, the Police said in a statement.

The suspects, Iddrisu Hardi alias Pagaaza and Mumuni Osman are in custody assisting investigation and will be put before court, the statement added.

Mr Iddrisu Hardi Pagazaa, a former deputy northern regional communications officer of the NDC and Mumuni Osman were reported to the police for storming the studios of Dagbon FM in the Northern Region on Wednesday, 3 May 2023, which coincidentally was World Press Freedom Day, to attack and assault Abubakar Sadiq Gariba, the host of an evening political talk show on Dagbon102.5 FM in the Northern Region, which belongs to the Class Media Group.

The live on-air attack happened between 8:30 pm and 9 pm.

Narrating what happened ,, Sadiq Gariba said the attack on him followed his earlier condemnation, on his show, of the exploitation of the Abudu-Andani chieftaincy crisis in Dagbon by some politicians including his attacker.

He said his assailant, who is alleged to be a member of Sagnarigu MP A.B.A. Fuseini’s campaign team, had earlier said on another radio station that “I should be the last person to advise him on communication because my communication can be compared to that of his daughter”.

“So, when I got to my show, I played the tape and said: ‘OK, whether my communication can be compared to that of the daughter or not, I will not discuss the substance of this issue because this guy, before making that statement about me, said something that I found to be false and anybody who is not credible is not worth being discussed on my show and, so, I will not discuss this tape on my show’, then I just switched to my topic of the day”, he said.

The radio host said: “Immediately he [Pagazar] walked into the studio, he came straight to me to attack; he didn’t ask of anything, he came straight to me to attack. He came and held my shirt, and squeezed it to my neck and the other colleague he came in with also held my shirt on the other side and they both squeezed it and pushed me to the wall and that colleague said if I should open my mouth, he will knock me and went ahead to tell me that if I don’t stop mentioning Hardi Pagazaa on your, he’ll kill me”.

Asked if he knew the gentleman who threatened to kill him, Saddique Gariba said: “I don’t know the gentleman’s name”.

A.B.A Fuseini disowns assailant.

When contacted , Mr A.B.A. Fuseini said he only knows the assailant as “a member of the NDC”, and described as “absolutely trash”, any reported association with him in any way whatsoever.

“He’s not even on my campaign team let alone being my campaign manager”, Mr Fuseini denied, adding: “He has nothing to do with my campaign. He doesn’t hold any position in my campaign”.

He empathised with the victim and condemned the attack.

“Let me first and foremost express regret at anybody who harasses a journalist. I’ve been a journalist for over three decades and I am the first to uphold the inalienable rights and freedoms of journalists to work in an environment that is conducive to the carrying out of their professional duties”, he sympathised, noting: “So, I will be the last person to even think remotely about anything that will impede the work of journalists”.

“So, if any such incident happened to anybody, that person has my unqualified sympathies and support and I want to make it unequivocally clear that I condemn in no uncertain terms, any attempt by anybody to impede the work of journalists let alone harass or intimidate journalists”.

The lawmaker suspects the links being drawn between him and the alleged assailant are a product of his detractors.

“The issue that is being raised and associating it with me is just some propaganda that some people are trying to claw back something because they are losing the contest in the constituency because there is no such association”, he said.

Mr Fuseini insisted the assailant “doesn’t occupy any position, he’s not a member of my campaign team and he doesn’t occupy any position in my campaign, so, you can talk about the gentleman and his conduct but not in his association with me A.B.A Fuseini, never”. Meanwhile, the Ghana Journalist Association and the Ministry of Information have condemned the act and called on the police to arrest the culprits.
