A Jamaican man who has been wanted in Westmoreland for murder since May 2022 was arrested in the United States just over a week ago.

The man, whose identity has not been made public, was also wanted in Jamaica for unlawful possession of a firearm and wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, a release from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said on Friday.

Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston’s Fugitive Operations Team officers arrested the unlawfully present fugitive in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on April 14.

In June 2022, US Border Patrol in San Ysidro, California apprehended the Jamaican and served him a notice to appear before an immigration judge.

He was paroled from ICE custody.

ERO officers in Hartford discovered that the unlawfully present individual was wanted since May 2022 by law enforcement in Jamaica.

“I want to commend the excellent work of our team in Hartford for this arrest,” said ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd Lyons. “Officers with our Fugitive Operations team arrested this individual, who is wanted for murder in his home country, safely and without incident. This arrest is a testimony to the professionalism our officers maintain while carrying out ERO’s important public safety mission.”

Noncitizens placed into removal proceedings receive their legal due process from federal immigration judges in the immigration courts, which are administered by the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).

EOIR is an agency within the US Department of Justice and is separate from the Department of Homeland Security and ICE. Immigration judges in these courts make decisions based on the merits of each case.

ERO officers carry out the removal decisions made by the federal immigration judges, the release said.

ERO officers make enforcement decisions on a case-by-case basis professionally and responsibly, informed by their experience as law enforcement officials and in a way that best protects against the greatest threats to the homeland and the integrity of US immigration laws, the release added.

In fiscal year 2022, ERO arrested 46,396 noncitizens with criminal histories. This group had 198,498 associated charges and convictions, including 21,531 assault offences; 8,164 sex and sexual assault offences; 5,554 weapons offences; 1,501 homicide-related offences; and 1,114 kidnapping offences.
