Man 40,molests girl 10

A 40-year-old man who allegedly abducted and sexually molested a 10-year-old girl at Anaji Queen of Peace near Takoradi has been arrested by the police.

The man, whose name was given only as Thomas and a mason by profession, allegedly kept the little innocent girl in his room for six days while the parents were looking for her.

According to sources, the suspect would lock the little girl in his room when he was away to work and would allow her to come out when he return from work.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE in an interview, the father of the victim, Confidence Fiadzo, commended the police for their swift intervention in arresting the suspect.

He indicated that he used to stay at Mpatado with his children, including the 10-year-old girl, and that they moved to the Anaji area not long ago.

He said in the early morning of Saturday, May 6, 2023, his 10-year-old daughter decided to go and fetch water from a well at Anaji Queen of Peace, which is about 10 minutes walk from their new residence, and did not return.

He noted that when he realised that his little daughter was not returning, he asked her elder siblings to go and search for her but they could not find her.

“They combed all the area, including the location of the well and all uncompleted buildings, but they could not find my daughter,” he added.

He said later he reported the case to the police and made some radio announcements, and published her photograph on social media.

Mr. Fiadzo told DAILY GUIDE that a female neighbour of the suspect later saw the little girl come out of the man’s room.

According to the neighbour, because the man did not have a wife or a child, she became suspicious after seeing the little girl coming out of his room. So she reported the case to the Anaji police.

The police quickly rushed to the place, rescued the girl and arrested the suspect, and called the father to inform him.

They later directed the father to send her daughter to the hospital for an examination, and it was there that the doctors confirmed that the little girl was sexually molested by the suspect.

The suspect is currently at the Kwesimintsim Police Station assisting in investigations.

As part of the Ghana Police Service’s transformational agenda to improve the delivery of policing services to the public, the Police Service has decentralized criminal clearance services in the country as a first step towards a full automation process.

Effective Monday, 22nd May 2003, persons seeking criminal clearance can do so in any of the 25 Police regions across the country.

Currently, all criminal background checks are conducted exclusively at the CID Headquarters, Accra, and individuals and organisations who require this service have to travel all the way to Accra just for this purpose.

In order to ease this burden, the criminal clearance service has been decentralized to all the twenty-five (25) Police Regions across the country and the service can now be assessed from these locations without the need to come to Accra.

Currently, the Ghana Police Service has twenty-five (25) Police Regional Commands across the country where this service can be assessed. These are:

• Ahafo Regional Police Command-Goaso

• Bono Regional Police Command-Sunyani

• Bono East Regional Police Command-Techiman

• Ashanti Regional Police Command -Kumasi

• Ashanti South Regional Police Command -Bekwai

• Ashanti North Regional Police Command-Mampong

• Tema Regional Police Command-Tema

• Central Regional Police Command -Cape Coast

• Central East Regional Police Command -Kasoa

• Central North Regional Police Command-Assin Fosu

• Eastern Regional Police Command-Koforidua

• Eastern South Regional Police Command-Kibi

• Eastern North-Mpraeso

• Northern Regional Police Command -Tamale

• North-East-Nalerigu

• Savanah-Damango

• Upper East Regional Police Command -Bolga

• Upper West Regional Police Command-Wa

• Volta Regional Police Command-Ho

• Volta North Regional Police Command-Hohoe,

• Oti Regional Police Command-Dambai

• Western Regional Police Command-Takoradi

• Western Central Regional Police Command-Tarkwa

• Western North Regional Police Command-Sewi Wiawso

• Accra-Nima Police Station

The decentralisation of the criminal clearance process is expected to make the service more accessible and convenient for individuals across the country, thereby bringing another policing service closer to the doorstep of the public.

“We continue to urge the public to support us in our effort to become the best institution in the country and a reference point for Africa and beyond”.

Ghanaian forex trader, Bright Kojo Onipayede has sued Albert Nathaniel Hyde popularly known as Bongo Ideas for defamation.

Kojo Forex as he is widely called claims that Bongo Ideas published some statements about him on Twitter, damaging his reputation.

He is, therefore, demanding a compensation of 1 million Ghana cedis and a perpetual injunction restraining Bongo Ideas from making any further defamatory statements about him.

Giving more details in the lawsuit which he shared on his Twitter handle, Kojo Forex said an unqualified apology must also be rendered on social media and the defamatory tweets made retracted.

In April this year, Kojo Forex had sent a stern warning to the blogger, after Bongo Ideas went on a Twitter rant about him.

Among other things, Bongo had alleged that “Forex trading alone did not get you these things. You do other shady business.”

Again, he claimed that “the FX thingy is just a small part of the secretive online business empire (I will explain later) he runs. His profits from FX, as he makes it seem, do not come because he is a genius in the game. There are oldgees in the game who will tell you that he is a liar.

“You will soon be disappointed that FX is not a get-rich-quick-scheme. Only the Ponzi schemers make it seem so, which he is.”

These allegations were refuted by Kojo Forex, who claimed that the blogger was attacking him because he refused to mentor him.

The social media banter between the two ended with a threat from Kojo Forex to drag Bongo to court to prove the claims made against him, hence the current lawsuit.

Meanwhile, Bongo Ideas is known to troll celebrities on Twitter with the likes of Nana Aba Anamoah, Serwaa Amihere, Asamoah Gyan, Shatta Wale, Fella Makafui, Black Sherif and others constantly getting attacked by him.

It appears popular Ghanaian socialite cum musician, Mona Faiz Montrage, popularly known as Hajia4Reall may not go down alone if she’s found guilty of fraud in a $2 million romance scam case currently ongoing in the United States.

Hajia4Reall, who was arrested in the United Kingdom and extradited to the US on May 12, 2023, to face six charges, has pleaded not guilty in a Manhattan federal court.

According to Ghana’s Financial Intelligence Centre (IFC), which is working in conjunction with INTERPOL and FBI on the case, all persons within the social and business network of the suspect are now persons of interest in the investigation.

Hajia4Reall is known to particularly have many associates in both entertainment and business circles in Ghana, and was an ambassador for some business brands.

The Deputy Manager of IFC, Shaun Henry Osei, made the disclosure in an interview with Accra-based Starr FM.

“Obviously, she’s not going to be working alone, she’s going to be working in a network. The evidence that you have access to will actually lead you to be able to find out who her greater network is and obviously, if you find her greater network, by instinct you will want to look at those people because then they become persons of interest.

The FIC is Ghana’s national centre for the receipt and analysis of suspicious transaction reports and other information relevant to establish offences of money laundering or terrorist financing and proliferation financing (ML/TF&P) and disseminating actionable intelligence to competent authorities.

The centre is appealing to the public to volunteer relevant information on possible financial crimes for them to take the necessary actions.

“You can report to the FIC for starters. We receive reports from accountable institutions, from individuals so you can make a report and send it via mail and you can even bring it personally. Some of these young guys we see, I know most have been attributed to fraud but some are into very legitimate business. They are into forex trade and other business… Forex trade, I’m not certain what the law says on it, but what I can say is that when it comes to crypto and other things I think as a country we don’t yet have a definitive position on that per what the Bank of Ghana is saying and usually when there’s space like that people are likely to explore.”

The 30-year-old model appeared in Manhattan federal court on Monday, May 15 for her alleged involvement in a series of romance schemes targeting older people who lived alone.

She’s set to be released on home detention to her aunt’s New Jersey residence in the coming days on a $500,000 bond with GPS tracking via an ankle monitor, her lawyer and the prosecutor’s office have confirmed.

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, and Michael J. Driscoll, the Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announced the unsealing of a six-count Indictment charging Hajia4Real for her role in a series of romance schemes and for laundering the proceeds of those scheme.

Mona 4Reall is a public figure who rose to fame as an influencer through her Instagram profile, under the username ‘Hajia4Reall,’ which at one point had approximately 3.4 million Instagram followers and was among the top 10 profiles with the most followers in Ghana.

She was arrested in the United Kingdom where she had gone to perform at the Ghana Music Awards UK edition and was en route to Ghana.

According to the court, from 2013 thereabout through to 2019, the influencer was a member of a criminal enterprise based in Ghana that committed a series of frauds against individuals and businesses in the United States, including romance scams that targeted mostly elderly victims.

The prosecution said Hajia received money from several victims of romance frauds whom members of the Enterprise tricked into sending money.

Among the false pretences used to induce victims to send money to Montrage were (i) payments to transport gold to the United States from overseas; (ii) payments to resolve a fake FBI unemployment investigation; and (iii) payments to assist a fake United States army officer in receiving funds from Afghanistan.

The court said in one incident with her victims, Hajia used her real name and spoke to the victim several times by phone, later sending the victim a tribal marriage certificate purporting to show that she and the victim had been married in Ghana.

“The victim sent Montrage approximately 82 wire transfers totalling approximately $89,000 to purportedly help with costs associated with Montrage’s father’s farm in Ghana.”

The court added that “In total, Montrage controlled bank accounts that received over $2 million in fraudulent funds from the Enterprise.”

New Zealand police have arrested a man and charged him with two counts of arson in connection with a fire at a Wellington hostel that killed at least six people.

Key points:

Police say they may file more serious charges in relations to the deaths

The suspect has not yet been named by police

About two hours before the fatal blaze, there was a couch fire at the hostel which was not reported to emergency services

Police said the investigation was ongoing and they could file more serious charges in relation to the deaths at the scene.

Earlier, police said they had launched a homicide investigation.

The suspect, who was not immediately named by police, is scheduled to make his first appearance on Friday in the Wellington District Court.

Earlier, police removed the first two bodies from the Loafers Lodge hostel and said they planned to remove the next two on Friday.

Police Inspector Dion Bennett said was possible they would find more victims as officers continued their scene examination.

"The damage on the third floor is significant," Inspector Bennett told reporters.

"The debris is piled high and there is much for them to move and search underneath."

He declined to say if they had found accelerant or other evidence of criminal behaviour at the scene.

The Loafers Lodge offered 92 basic, affordable rooms with shared lounges, kitchens and laundry facilities to people of a wide range of ages.

Couch fire just hours before fatal blaze

Police said there had been a couch fire at the Loafers Lodge hostel about two hours before the large, fatal fire on Tuesday.

They said the couch fire was not reported to emergency services at the time, and they were investigating to see if there was any link between the two fires.

The fatal fire ripped through the building early on Tuesday, forcing some people to flee in their pyjamas. Others were rescued by firefighters from the roof or dived from windows.

Safety tape is seen cordoning off a four-storey building with visible fire damage to the top floor

The fire caused serious structural damage to the hostel.

The Loafers Lodge offered 92 basic, affordable rooms with shared lounges, kitchens and laundry facilities to people of a wide range of ages. Some people were placed there by government agencies. Others worked at a nearby hospital.

Emergency officials said the building had no fire sprinklers.

New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said the nation's building codes did not require sprinklers in older buildings where they would need to be retrofitted.

"I have asked the minister for housing to look particularly at issues around building regulations to see whether there's anything more that we should be doing right at this point," Mr Hipkins told reporters on Wednesday.

The Accra Circuit Court One has handed down a judgment, sentencing a Nigerian citizen to eight years of imprisonment with hard labour for impersonating COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah on social media and defrauding unsuspecting individuals.

The convict, Bright Daniels, who was already serving a sentence at the Nsawam Prisons when he committed the crime, initially denied the offence but was found guilty after a full trial.

DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye, Deputy Superintendent of Police, provided the details of the case to the Court, presided over by Mrs Afia Owusua Appiah. The complainant in the case was COP Mrs Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, the former head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and currently serving as the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The offender, Bright Daniels, is a Nigerian national who had previously served a seven-year jail term at the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons.

The court was informed that Daniels' accomplice, Livinus Amadianaeze Ugwu, who is also a Nigerian and an ex-convict, is currently evading arrest.

According to DSP Nyamekye, in April 2021, COP Addo-Danquah discovered a fake Facebook Messenger account created in her name, using her picture, which was being used to extort money from a police personnel by falsely promising them opportunities to secure slots in United Nations (UN) and African Union (AU) missions in Somalia and Sudan.

The individual behind the fake account contacted the victims and instructed them to make payments through a mobile money network.

One of the victims, Detective Chief Inspector Baffoe, paid GH¢10,000.00 to the provided number, which was later withdrawn by Bright Daniels.

Investigations revealed that the phone number used in the scam was traced back to the vicinity of the Nsawam Medium Security Prisons in the Eastern Region.

Further investigations led to the discovery that Daniels was the user of that phone number. The police conducted a search, during which they recovered a Samsung Galaxy A02 phone used by Daniels to communicate with Ugwu, as well as a Tecno feature phone that was used to receive money from Detective Chief Inspector Baffoe.

Forensic examination of the devices revealed that Daniels and Ugwu conspired to exploit the name and photograph of COP Addo-Danquah to fraudulently obtain money from police personnel, promising them slots in the United Nations and African Union Missions in Somalia.

Daniels was found to have obtained the SIM card with the number 02******* that was used to receive money from their victims.

After admitting to the offence, Daniels was charged and brought before the court following the completion of the investigations.

Court remands man for insulting Akufo-Addo

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded into police custody a 40-year-old tile setter for insulting President of the republic of Ghana Nana Akuffo-Addo.

Raphael Okoe Ankrah, also known as Okoe Killer was arrested after police saw a video posted to social media showing the accused using very unsavoury words on the President.

He has since pleaded not guilty to offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace.

The Court presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, ordered that Ankrah be brought back on May 30, 2023.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Maxwell Oppong told the Court that Ankrah lived in Jamestown.

He said on May 15, 2023, the Police saw a viral video in which the Ankrah was seen insulting the President.

ASP Oppong said the police had to arrest Ankrah because the video was not only vile but had annoyed and agitated the public.

The Police’s Intelligence Directorate tracked Ankrah and arrested him at his hideout at James Town in Accra.

The prosecution said Ankrah admitted the offence in his investigation cautioned statement and was accordingly charged.

Mr Yaw Dankwa, Ankrah’s Defense Counsel who prayed for bail for the accused, said the charge did not support the facts, which he said was political, because his client denied the offence upon his arrest.

He suggested that the said video could have been manipulated and until it was presented and scrutinised in court, his client was innocent of the charges.

Mr Dankwa said Ankrah, a “responsible father” with a wife who had a two-week baby, was not a flight risk.

He said Ankrah had “people of substance” ready to stand surety for him.

The prosecution, opposing the bail, pleaded with the Court to send the accused to the psychiatric hospital as he told police he was not in his right frame of mind.

ASP Oppong said that based on Ankrah’s utterances in the video, he would be safer in police custody because his life was in danger in his community.

On him not being a flight risk, the prosecution said Ankrah was a squatter living in an uncompleted building with no fixed place of abode, but his lawyer said there were no uncompleted buildings in James Town.

A former contestant on the reality TV show “Mentor” has been sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of manslaughter.

Bismark Ato Foster was found guilty after a trial in which prosecutors argued that he was responsible for the death of another individual, Razak Mohammed at Nungua Coco-Beach on September 26, 2016.

The charges against him included murder and the use of an offensive weapon.

Bismark had originally been charged with second-degree murder, but the jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Following deliberations, the jury reached a guilty verdict of manslaughter and the use of an offensive weapon against Foster.

Initially, the jury returned a 6-1 guilty verdict. However, after further deliberations, the jury found Foster guilty.

Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, presiding over the case at Criminal Court ‘3,’ sentenced Foster to life imprisonment, as recommended by the jury.

Additionally, he was given a 25-year sentence for the use of the offensive weapon, both of which will be served concurrently.

Foster’s defense counsel made a plea for mitigation, citing his client’s first-time offender status and his good conduct throughout the trial.

Furthermore, the defense noted his commitment to attending all court proceedings.

The judge issued the life sentence to Foster, despite defense attorneys emphasising his young age, bright future, and claiming him to be a victim of circumstances.

The prosecution argued that the offense was serious, requiring a life sentence as a deterrent to others, and that the gun had been fired twice, implying intent.

After hearing both parties, Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzu handed down a life sentence.

Meanwhile, Foster’s legal team has declared they will launch an appeal against the conviction and sentence.
